Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of gum chewing on the caries, periodontium, saliva, plaque and oral hygiene.
100 dental college students were the subjects of the study. Gum chewing frequency was surveyed by a questionnaire. The Pearson correlation coefficients between the frequency of gum chewing and the DMFT Index, the Periodontal Index, the Oral Hygiene Index, the saliva flow rate, saliva relative viscosity; and the saliva buffering capacity were computed. Also, a group of 11 students volunteered to participate in plaque removal effect studies. For 11 subjects, the tooth brushing was forbidden for two days. Then the difference of PHI Index of the result of gum chewing (before and after the gum chewing) was examined.
The obtained results were as follows:
1. There-was no correlation between the frequency of gum chewing and the DMFT Index, the Periodontal Index, the Oral Hygiene Index, the saliva flow rate, saliva relative viscosity, and the saliva buffering capacity.
2. The effect of elimination of plaque was found. And PHP Index was recuded by 7.$6% after gum chewing.
